This rhino cannot be stitched together again. The red in this piece symbolizes its blood and the species hanging by a thread. The vertical red line is final. At that point the rhino will be irreversibly extinct.

With a nod to Stravinsky's ballet by the same name, the Firebird represents the sudden devastation of wild fires in the Cape, which are simultaneously beautiful yet destructive. The fire comes in an instant - a fleeting moment of immense beauty that leaves its victims in ruin.

Kitsugi Elephants

Kitsugi is the Japanese custom 'to repair broken porcelain with gold' to restore its beauty and enhance its value.
In this work the elephants are separated. The family unit is broken up. The gold is an attempt to mend it. However poaching for ivory remains the biggest threat to elephants, with ivory being more valuable than gold.

The rhino is made up from many small pieces of fabrics, to suggest the textures of its thick skin. This piece hangs in a Karoo Lodge , on a farm called Rhenosterhoek, where these beautiful animals used to roam.

Elephant Bowl

Kitsugi is the Japanese custom "to repair with gold ". Porcelain breakage is regarded simply as an event rather than a reason to discard. The gold enhances its value and story. This bowl is cracked symbolizing the breaking up of elephant families, due to poaching for ivory. Ironically ivory is more valuable than gold and the damage done to this species is irreversible.
