Kitsugi Elephants

112x102cm

Kitsugi is the Japanese custom 'to repair broken porcelain with gold' to restore its beauty and enhance its value.

In this work the elephants are separated. The family unit is broken up. The gold is an attempt to mend it. However poaching for ivory remains the biggest threat to elephants, with ivory being more valuable than gold.

Desert Gecko

74x62cm

In the heat of the day, the gecko sits on the cooler side of the rock .

Elephant Bowl

120x74cm

Kitsugi is the Japanese custom "to repair with gold ". Porcelain breakage is regarded simply as an event rather than a reason to discard. The gold enhances its value and story. This bowl is cracked symbolizing the breaking up of elephant families, due to poaching for ivory. Ironically ivory is more valuable than gold and the damage done to this species is irreversible.
